Community 5K

Paws Colinas 5K-9

A life lived in community has all kinds of opportunities for moments of connectedness. In October, two of the clinicians at Dallas Therapeutic Services (myself and Christina) had the opportunity to dress up and support the animals in a local 5K. To make sure our costumes were on point, we also brought along our faithful canine companions, Indy and Auggie. Well before the race, we had decided to walk instead of trying to run. I think we both said it was because our dogs couldn’t run a 5K, but the reality is I’m not convinced I could have run a 5K - especially with the costume I chose! This gave us a beautiful opportunity to spend a couple of hours just talking, learning about each others' lives and creating some pretty great camaraderie.

Those little moments add up to be quite a lot. I would encourage anyone to find the time to create space for conversations. We are often so concerned with being on the move and getting things done that we don’t take the time to be in community, but it’s a space that, when we show up for it, can create magical moments. And even if they're not magical moments, community may help to alleviate things such as depression or anxiety. Never underestimate how powerful those small moments can be in the grand scheme of things.
